UrbanApa 2010, 14-17.10.2010

It's nice to have more events to Finland that offer dancers a space to share their talent and visions.

UrbanApa 2010: raw monkey nights was a theatre evening showing some urban art. Our lovely Cleva girls Joanna, Jenni and Linda did a house performance, Dance.fi showed their experimental movement, NOM-kollektiivi was throwing superballs, Murha-kollektiivi mixed contemporary and street dance with pure plastic and Kati Kokosuo summed it up with her brilliant comedienne show. The night was hosted by super Janne and the UrbanApa house band kept the vibe high.

On Sunday there was more jam-a-like session at the Stoa lounge. Some showcases and a panel discussion about street dance in theatre. The highlight was the Raw Monkey Style-battle, where all the contestants were invited. Joanna (Cleva) and SAKI-1 (Beat warriors) won the competition. bElles was there too as a partner and selling their goodies. The battle winners got a gift card to bElles. Super Janne performed at the end and people were jammin'.

Finlands streetdance scene is groving! Thanks for Anniina and Sonya, and everyone behind for the idea and organization. Keep up the good work.

Willow Smith - Whip My Hair

This girl is off the hook! She is only 9 years old and she has the whole package! The style, hair, looks, gears, moves and such a diva attitude. She is soo cute. The video is just great, with the dance and everything. Where do these children come from?! Well, this time it's easy: from Will Smith. If only my father was the Prince of Bel Air.

Well she does have a great stylist. Gaga and Rihanna you better watch out.

the definition of a badass

I couldn't get sleep one night, so I put the word badass style on google and found urban dictionary translations for badass. Here's my favourite ones:
  • Not doing things half assed. If your going to do something, do it right. If your going to wreck your dirtbike, do it right...break an ankle or something.
  • Ultra-cool motherfucker
  • The ability to kick someone's ass and look amazing doing it.
  • The epitome of the American Women. She radiates confidence in everything she does, whether it's ordering a drink, buying a set of wheels, or dealing with men. She's slow to anger, brutally efficient when fighting back. The badass carves her own path. She wears, drives, drinks, watches, and listens to what she chooses, when she chooses, where she chooses, uninfluenced by fads or advertising campaigns. Badass style is understated but instantly recognizable. Like a chopped Harley or a good pair of sunglasses: simple, direct, and functional.
Well, we are not american. But we sure are...

Friday Night Locking at Saiffa

Friday night was for wristroll lovers, booty shakers and finger pointers. It was time for the first ever locking jam at Saiffa. Atmosphere was funky, people were jamming and having a good time.

Dj Mercy-1 dropped some funky beats and Hatsolo was on the mic. This time it wasn't freestyle rappin but hosting the solo locking battle. Judges were Rob One (Sweden), Teemu (Will Funk For Food) and Niko (Natural Hype). It was nice too see some new lockers entering. And of course I enjoyed seeing my groovy soul sisters Jeniwai and Jenny feeling it. If the competition would have been "funky soultrain line" our girl Jeniwai would have won with out a doubt! The final battle was Jeffrey Kam against Jontte. Jeffrey came out as the winner, congrats to him. He is really good with the music and damn his leg goes high.

Stand out nail - stickers

We went to see Kid Sister yesterday. And of course we had to put our Pro Nails on!

We have never been that in to nails and stuff. I have always kept my nails short and neat, an old habbit from my childhood when I was a promising pianist. Stand out nail - stickers are quick and easy. It takes 10 minutes to put them on. First make sure that you don't have lotion on your hands and that they are completely dry and warm. Then pick the right sized sticker to fit your nails. After that you have to file off the excess of the sticker with a nail file. Finally you can apply some transparent cover nail polish on top. And you are good to go!

M is wearing the japanise flavoured cherry tree nails and K has the cougar printed. Available in various patterns. Get yours from Venla: vvuorio@hotmail.com! Or search for the group Stand Out Nail-Stickers  on Facebook.

Sorry to say, but we were a bit dissapointed on Kid Sister. Actually we didn't know much about her and aren't that great fans of her music. But we feel that she could have the whole package, she just doesn't rock it. We only knew this song and Rusko has made it 1000 times better!!

Badass Style lecture at Salo

We gave our very first lecture at Salo vocational school today. The listeners were mostly clothing
and accessories design students and teachers. We were flattered when they contacted us, I have never imagined to see my name and the word lecture in the same sentence!

We were little worried about how we gonna spend the 45 minutes they had planned for us. But actually it was very easy to speak because we knew exactly what we were talking about. First we introduced ourselves, explained our dance history and something about the streetdance history in general. And then we told about our clothing line Badass style, about the idea behind it, the clothes and jewellery, inspiration and stuff. K had prepared us a dope power point show. At the end we did a dance demo about hiphop and waacking. You know when you are standing in the front of a class room you can see if someone is sleeping, sending text messages or playing the worm game etc, but people just sat there quietly and were listening to what we had to say! Once in a lifetime we felt like we were taken seriously haha.

The teachers asked us some good questions and after our presentation, they took us around their clothing department. I think it was very inspiring to both sides. The also had came up with further cooperation plans for us. Can't wait!

SADE festival 3.10.2010

"One of the most soulful events in the world". Once again SADE festival stod up to those words. An evening full of warm vibes, simply spreading the love for dance!

Lee (France) and Veera (Jyväskylä) doing their thing
First there was house 1vs1 battle. Our lovely Cleva girls Jenni and Linda were at the finals, Jenni was the winner. It was just pure beauty for my eyes! Those girls have grown so much. We also got through the preselection, and had to battle each other in the quarter finals. We had so much fun! We haven't been practising freestyle house at all, only took house workshops, so we were just laughing at each other when we noticed that our house moves were suddenly turning into more hiphop flavoured moves. It was a one round battle, and we gave our everything. But the judges decided that it was a tie. I'm telling you that the second round was even more hiphopish. M came out as the winner haha. But hey, it was a start. Just got to start practising.

Hiphop/bboy 2vs2 was a blast. M did her first judging ever. The other judges were Olli from Flow Mo and Martin(SWE). It was nice to see that there were new faces finally coming out and showing their skillz. There were 40 entering on the hiphop side and 20 on the bboy side. The pairs were made randomly and there were few match made in heaven! The battles were hc, everyone gave their best, and all their energy without being too serious. K and Elmo won the final agains Ita (Estonia) and Vadim.

Dance.fi experimental and Feel the Funk entertained us with their showcases.

After the event we went to chill at our girl Hazas place for a while before heading to the afterparty.
The afterparty was in Le Bonk, chilling at the roof top was chill. It was nice to be together with SADE crew, Saiffa boys and our crew, it has been a while. And once again some way too deep afterparty conversations with Simppa. Gotta love it. And of course the 15 minute afterafter party eating apples at our crib.

The next day didn't start that great. After the 5 hour sleep M headed to work by tram. The tram driver threw her out because she was eating Reissumies (darkbread). Quess he was on a bad mood.

Pictures by Samuli Ronkanen. More pictures: http://smulfhunter.com/sade_gloria_2010/index.html

Thanks for the organizers, Jeniwai, Jenny and Joanna for making it happen. Djs 3rrrd and Axl, the judges: Martin Ferretti, Sara, Lasa and Olli, host Simppa, bElles, Custom Painted Sunglasses, the audience, and all the wonderful dancers! Keep up the good work!
